Restore Marriage After Divorce – Advantages and Disadvantages
The Pros and Cons of Getting Back Together after Divorce
It can be pretty surprising to some people but there are many couples who actually try to restore marriage after divorce for different reasons. No matter how you look at it, this can be a pretty risky move and it does come with its share of advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
Rekindling your love with your ex-spouse after going through a divorce can be beneficial for both parties, but only if the separation was not due to abuse, violence or similar reasons. If you had decided to get divorced due to personal differences or incompatibility, it can be worthwhile to restore marriage after divorce. This is especially true if both of you have had enough time to think and are now able to clearly understand the other side of the issue.
Sometimes, it takes a divorce for two people to realize just how much they mean to each other. Once they are freed from the suffocating ties of their marriage, their eyes may be opened to what they couldn’t see when they were still married.
You might also want to restore marriage after divorce if you see that your children are the ones that are suffering the most due to the situation. Children can be highly traumatized when their parents separate for good. Older kids may turn to drugs, rebellion and promiscuity, while younger children may harbor resentment towards their parents for the rest of their lives.
Finally, you may also consider getting back together with your ex-spouse if you simply cannot see yourself having a relationship with anyone else. In a way, this may seem like you are settling, which is not a very attractive option. But on the other hand, it can also be practical, especially if you are already getting along in years and are emotionally incapable of building a new relationship with someone else.
Disadvantages
An obvious disadvantage of trying to restore marriage after divorce is that you are putting yourself back into the very same situation that you were trying to escape a short time ago. Unless it is clear that both of you have grown and changed in positive ways, there is no reason why you should expect anything different in the relationship this time around. It is even a worse idea to restore marriage after divorce if you had originally left due to life-threatening reasons.
At the end of the day, the decision to restore marriage after divorce will be up to you and your ex. Just make sure that you take your time and consider all factors, as this is a decision that will certainly affect the rest of your life.
